Ordinance Innovations – A Firearm Design Hobby
Crafting Precision: My Journey in Firearm Design
Designing firearms has always been more than a pastime for me, it’s a way of blending history, engineering, and artistry into something tangible. What began as a fascination with mechanical systems evolved into a deep appreciation for the elegance of classic rifles and the innovation required to adapt them for modern use.
I’ve found a platform to showcase this passion. The Model 1890 Falling Block rifle is a perfect example of how tradition and technology can coexist. Inspired by Milton Farrow’s original designs, this rifle has been re-imagined with modern machining techniques and chambered for the .405 Winchester Center Fire (WCF) cartridge. It’s a cartridge that has stood the test of time, mild-mannered yet powerful, capable of handling game worldwide while offering precision on paper targets.

Why Firearm Design Captivates Me
- Mechanical elegance: Firearms are intricate machines where every pin, spring, and surface must work in harmony. Designing them requires precision and patience, which I find deeply rewarding.
- Historical continuity: Working with cartridges like the .405 WCF connects me to a lineage of hunters and marksmen who relied on these tools for over a century.
- Innovation through tradition: By applying modern CNC and EDM machining to classic designs, I can honor the past while meeting the demands of today’s shooters.
The Model 1890: A Case Study
The Model 1890 Long Hunter, weighing under 8 pounds, embodies my design philosophy. It’s lightweight enough for rugged terrain yet robust enough to deliver consistent accuracy. With interchangeable barrels and components, it allows shooters to switch between calibers like the .45-90 or .51-110, making it versatile without sacrificing reliability.
Every detail matters:
- Heat-treated high-grade steel ensures durability.
- Moly-coated internals reduce friction and extend longevity.
- High-tech machining guarantees precision tolerances.

Looking Ahead
Firearm design isn’t just about hunting rifles, it’s about pushing boundaries. I’m excited to explore how falling block actions can be adapted for long-distance target shooting, leveraging cartridges from Lapua, Barrett, and CheyTac. Competitions demand accuracy, patience, and skill, and I believe modernized classics can rise to the challenge.
A Personal Reflection
For me, firearm design is a dialogue between past and present. It’s about respecting the craftsmanship of pioneers like Farrow while daring to innovate with today’s technology. Whether I’m sketching a new concept, machining a prototype, or testing performance in the field, the process is both meditative and exhilarating.
In the end, firearm design is my way of celebrating engineering excellence and honoring tradition. Ordinance Innovation is where that vision can take shape, one rifle at a time.
